Ferdinand Ludwig is professor for Green Technologies in Landscape Architecture at the Technical University of Munich. He studied architecture and received his doctorate in “Botanical Foundations of Baubotanik and their Application in Design” from the University of Stuttgart. In 2007, he founded the research group Baubotanik at the Institute for Architectural Theory and Design, which he led as a research associate until 2017.
His research focuses on architectural concepts in which plants play a central role. Their functional and conceptual integration not only provides answers to the pressing ecological questions of our time, such as adaptation to climate change. It also poses a methodological challenge as to how aspects of growth and decay, chance and probability can be dealt with in design.

Dipl. Ing. Daniel Schönle
Architect and Urban Planner BDA
Vita

Daniel Schönle studied architecture and urban planning at the University of Stuttgart and graduated in 2002 under Prof. Wolfgang Schwinge at the Institute for Architectural Theory and Design (IGMA).
From 2002-2007, he worked independently and as an employee at bueroschneidermeyer. Since 2003 he has been working in interdisciplinary cooperations with different offices and partners in Germany and abroad and has successfully participated in competitions.
Since 2008 he is registered as a freelance architect and urban planner and runs a planning office in Stuttgart.
Parallel to his planning activities, Daniel Schönle also teaches at various universities. From March 2010 to August 2011, he was a research assistant at the Urban Planning Institute of the University of Stuttgart. Since April 2012, he has been teaching as part of the international master’s program Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design (IUSD) at the University of Stuttgart, and from April 2016 to September 2019, he was head of the department of Fundamentals of Local and Regional Planning at the Urban Planning Institute as a deputy professor professor.

Vita

Jakob Rauscher studied architecture at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart and the Ècole Speciale d’Architecture Paris. He is interested in conceptual design, where unusual frameworks such as time, growth, multiple uses, or micro-living inspire him to create new solutions. He has been designing cities, neighborhoods, houses, and trees with Daniel Schönle and Ferdinand Ludwig since 2012. From 2016 to 2019, he was an academic assistant at the Department of Foundations of Local and Regional Planning at the Urban Planning Institute of the University of Stuttgart.

Introduction

As a partnership of architects, urban planners, and Baubotanik designers, Office for Living Architecture OLA develops green architecture and blue-green infrastructure at a variety of scales. We work in interdisciplinary networks and different roles: from complete conception and design to conceptual and technical consulting. In doing so, we take up the challenge of making the spatial, aesthetic, ecological, constructive and processual potentials of plants in architecture, urban development and open space planning fruitful in new ways.
We develop concepts that link the growth processes of Baubotanik structures and plants with urban transformation processes.
We develop projects in which canopies become a tangible space and trees are an integral part of the building.
We incorporate the physiological services of plants into our concepts to use water and energy synergistically.
We plan Baubotanik constructions and green spaces down to the smallest detail and develop implementation and maintenance models together with practice partners.
In this way we try to transfer the visionary idea of living architecture into the practice of planning and building in a concrete way.
