Office for Living Architecture

DE

A new, shaded, and partially weather-protected learning and social space for students is to be created in the Alleegarten. The centrally located site between the cafeteria and the Tanzbrunnen is particularly well-suited as a gathering place, but has so far suffered from severe overheating in the summer—despite its valuable tree population.

During a workshop, the desired uses were defined in detail together with students. The focus is on providing quiet spaces for work and discussion, equipped with Wi-Fi and power outlets. The space is conceived as an extension of the nearby library and complements it both functionally and aesthetically.

The design gently reshapes the existing topography and creates a sheltered backdrop to the footpath. To the south, seating steps open up, complemented by shaded workspaces and a spacious network of loungers. Over time, the pavilion will evolve into a hybrid structure combining architecture and living elements: initially, a temporary structure will support the roof, but later the growing trees will gradually take over this structural function. The result is a flexible, sustainable learning space that grows alongside the site and its vegetation.
